In a new interview with Shape magazine, Riverdale star Camila Mendes opened up about her struggle with bulimia and why she thinks it’s so important to talk about it openly.

She struggled with an eating disorder during high school, college, and when she started working in Hollywood, and she called her relationship with food anxiety-producing. Her fear and avoidance of carbs specifically led her to binge, which fueled her desire to purge.

“I was always punishing myself. I was even anxious about healthy food,” she told Shape. “I was consumed with the details of what I was eating, and I always felt as if I was doing something wrong.”

About a year ago, she started seeing a therapist and a nutritionist that she said “cured” her anxieties, and especially her fear of carbs. Camila learned that having a balanced diet with make her the healthiest in the long-run. “The voices in my head never completely go away. They’re just way quieter now.”

Camila’s been open about her struggle on social media, and she said that while it was a tough decision to make to share that with the world, she’s happy she did.

“I realized that I have this platform, and young women and men who look up to me, and there is a tremendous power to do something positive with it,” she said. “It was definitely a very vulnerable thing to put that out there to almost 12 million people on social media. But that’s who I am. That’s me being authentically myself.”
