Halsey issues defiant pride message as draws attention to attacked gay couple
Halsey has no time for the so-called straight pride parade as the singer shared a defiant message in support of LGBT+ rights on Monday.
Performing her epic show in London’s Camden, the American singer donned a shirt that spoke loud and proud, ensuring her message wasn’t dulled and muted.
She provided a message of queer solidarity in the wake of the horrific assault of a gay couple who were attacked for not kissing in front of goading commuters last month.
Ryanair worker Melania Geymonat, 28, from Uruguay, was left with a suspected broken nose while girlfriend Chris, from the US, was also beaten up on the London bus they were travelling on in the early hours of 30 May.
Melania claims a gang of young men behind them saw they were a couple and started to demand they kiss while making crude sexual gestures.
In a horrific photo of the aftermath of their attack, which made its way around the world, both women are seen covered in blood.
Halsey picked this up and brought it back to her show, the image emblazoned on the front of her t-shirt which read ‘F*ck your straight pride’ on the back.
‘Two people on my shirt are a young couple Melania and Chris, a couple nights ago right here they were assaulted because they are lesbians,’ she told the crowd gathered at Electric Ballroom.
‘It’s Pride month right now. Which is a really exciting thing… But the sad reality is that after the Pride parade is over and the bars closed, and the glitter is being swept out of the streets a lot of people get on those trains and they get on those buses, and they wash the rainbows off their skin and peel the stickers off their clothes.
‘Because when Pride is over, it’s not safe to be gay anymore. There is a worry that someone is going to viciously assault them or attack them.’
She added: ‘When people around the world ask, “why isn’t there a straight Pride parade?” The answer is because if there was one, you wouldn’t have to get on a bus and be terrified of being f**king beaten or killed afterwards.
‘That’s why there’s not a straight Pride parade.
‘Because every f**king day on public transport is a straight Pride parade.’
Following the attack on Melania and Chris Met Police said the suspects are aged between 15 to 18 and were arrested on suspicion of robbery and aggravated GBH; they were later released on bail.
