How Camila Mendes overcame her fear of carbs
Bring on the quinoa for “Riverdale” star Camila Mendes.
The actress, 24, opened up to Shape about her past struggles with bulimia and her anxiety-ridden relationship with food, specifically with carbohydrates.
“I was so scared of carbs that I wouldn’t let myself eat bread or rice ever,” she said. “I’d go a week without eating them, then I would binge on them, and that would make me want to purge.”
Mendes, who covers the magazine’s November issue, explained that she struggled with the eating disorder in high school and it returned when she became famous. With the help of a therapist and a nutritionist, the actress was able to adjust her mindset when it came to eating.
“‘You won’t be scared of carbs anymore because you’re going to realize that eating them isn’t going to make you gain weight,’” Mendes recalled her nutritionist telling her, explaining that the professional taught her to eat healthier carbs in moderation.
The actress, who recently confirmed she’s dating co-star Charles Melton, says she’s no longer “addicted to dieting,” and practices mindfulness when eating and exercising.
“Exercise is the one time when I’m not working,” she explained, adding that she gravitates toward yoga and pilates. “My phone is in a locker, and it’s just my trainer and me, or me in a class. I can completely focus and meditate in an active way.”
And as for any remnants of low self-esteem brought on by her previous struggles, Mendes says those thoughts are “quieter.”
“Every once in a while I’ll look at myself in the mirror and think, Ugh, I don’t like the way that looks. But then I’ll just drop it. I don’t let it consume me.”
