James Corden may QUIT Late Late Show next year for UK return

James Corden may QUIT Late Late Show next year because he ‘misses home’ and thinks UK is the ‘best environment’ to educate his children

James Corden has suggested he may not renew his contract to stay on as host of The Late Late Show in America when it comes up for renewal in 2020.

The comic and chat show host – who relocated his wife Julia Carey and their family to Los Angeles five years ago to present the nightly programme – told the Stagecraft podcast that he misses his native England and is considering what’s best for his young children.

‘I have a year left on my contract. It’s hard. It’s so much more than just, “What do I want to do?”,’ the 40-year-old said. ‘We’re a long way from home, my wife and I, and our children, and there are people at home that we miss deeply and we care about and they’re getting older.

‘Then there is the question of where do we educate our children and where is the best environment for them.’

He also claimed that money wouldn’t sway him.

‘I think you’ve got to be too careful not to get into money. It can be a dangerous thing if you are using it for new creative endeavours. I might just slip away and be a footnote and a memory for someone.

‘Doing the show itself was a punk move and I will always be drawn to the next punk move.’

James and Julia share children Max, eight, Charlotte, four, and Carey, one – the latter two being raised in LA their whole lives. The family made the move stateside in 2015.

In an interview with Chris Evans on his Virgin Radio Breakfast show, James addressed his longevity on The Late Late Show further, saying: ‘I imagine I’ll stay doing it for a little while. It might be that every time it comes up, there is still a “I want to do that” but there are things I miss about being in a play and writing and muscles I still enjoy using from time to time. It would be for a few years. My hunch is we’ll do it for a while.’

James succeeded Craig Ferguson as host of the American late-night talk show in March of that year, launching new segment Carpool Karaoke, which went on to be the programme’s stand-out segment.

Carpool Karaoke has since featured spin-offs, with the episode featuring singer Adele becoming the biggest YouTube viral video of 2016.

New York, New York: Earlier this month, James hosted the 73rd Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, with the gig going down so well he has been tipped to try his hand at presenting the Oscars next year

It has since gone on to feature the likes of Mariah Carey, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Victoria Beckham, Madonna, Michelle Obama and Take That.

James’ move to the states has raised his profile on both sides of the pond, but the draw to the UK seems to remain strong – announcing earlier this year that he will return to the BBC at Christmas for a special episode of Gavin & Stacey, the sitcom he penned in the earlier stages of his career.
