MTV VMAs winners: Cardi B is a red hot vixen in skimpy costume as she celebrates win for Best Hip Hop video

  • Taylor Swift won two awards, Video For Good and Video of the Year, for her hit song You Need to Calm Down
  • Teenage superstar Billie Eilish won three awards, including Best New Artist, though she was unable to attend the awards ceremony since she’s on tour 
  • Ariana Grande also won three awards, including Artist of the Year, but she was not in attendance as well
  • Cardi B also took to the stage to present Missy Elliott with the Video Vanguard Award 
  • Lil Nas X, Lizzo, Missy Elliott and more brought the house down with epic performances
  • Comedian Sebastian Manascalco hosted the ceremony and opened with a monologue poking fun at millennial culture 

The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards kicked off with an electric performance by Taylor Swift, singing her new songs You Need to Calm Down and Lover, but it was Cardi B who took home the first moon man of the night for Best Hip Hop video.

The 26- year old singer won the VMA award for the hit song Money, presented by Rick Ross and Pepa from Salt n Pepa, taking to the stage in a unique red dress that showed off plenty of the singer’s assets.

The rapper beat out Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Cardi B, 2 Chainz, DJ Khaled for the first award of the night, thanking her crew and the director, Jora Frantzis for her work on the video.

J Balvin added that he’s, ‘super proud to be Latino’ before adding a passionate plea to help the Amazon rainforest fire.

‘We need to help because it’s burning on fire. So we need to help the jungle. Thank you,’ he said.

Lizzo then took to the stage to perform a medley of her hit songs Truth Hurts and Good As Hell.

After an medley of Jonas Brothers songs, broadcast live from the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Billy Ray Cyrus took to the stage to introduce the record-shattering artist Lil Nas X, making his VMA debut by singing his new song Panini.

Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye presented the award for Video For Good, which was won by Taylor Swift for You Need to Calm Down.

The 29 year old singer beat out Halsey (Nightmare), The Killers (Land of the Free), Jamie N Commons, Skylar Grey ft. Gallant (Runaway Train), John Legend (Preach) and Lil Dicky (Earth).

‘Oh, my gosh. Thank you so much. I grew up in a small town and my entire life all I wanted in the entire world was to be Ariel from The Little Mermaid,’ Hall began.

‘I put a red towel on my leg and tied my legs together and jumped in a pool and after that people told me the things I cannot do and can’t accomplish in the world,’ Hall added.

She added that her unique videos were often inspired by artists like Jackson, Peter Gabriel and Busta Rhymes, who is, ‘the inspiration in me.’

‘And lastly, I want to dedicate this award to the dance community all around the world, because when y’all get on the stage with these artists, y’all are not just props. Y’all are the icing on the cake,’ she said. 

‘Y’all are the beat to the heart. And so I dedicate this to every dance community out there and including these hard workers. This is the next generation. I promise y’all, I love y’all with all my heart. If my heart could speak, you would know how grateful I am. I am so grateful and humbled,’ she concluded.

Lindsey Vonn and New Jersey Devils star P.K. Subban came on stage in the Barclays Center, which hosted the ceremony but is also is the home of the Devils.

They introduced Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, who performed their hit song Senorita together for the first time at the ceremony.

Queen Latifah and John Travolta came up to present the Video of the Year award, with Travolta even poking fun at his history of botching names during awards shows.

Taylor Swift won the award for You Need To Calm Down, beating out 21 Savage ft. J. Cole (a lot), Billie Eilish (Bad Guy), Ariana Grande (thank u, next), Jonas Brothers (Sucker) and Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus – Old Town Road (Remix). 

During her speech, she made quite the political statement.

The global superstar added at the end of her video there was a petition for the Equality Act, ‘which basically says we all deserve equal rights under the law.’

She then thanked everyone who signed the petition, which has a half million signatures, ‘five times the amount that it would need to warrant a response from the White House,’ she added, while checking her watch.

Keke Plamer came out to present the Song of the Year award, which was won by Lil Nas X for his record-breaking hit song Old Town Road.

He began by stating this was his ‘first award ever,’ and then he went on to thank Billy Ray Cyrus, who joined him on stage, for taking his career to the next level.

He then joked that he had a little speech, before unfurling a huge scroll, that brought some big laughs, including one from Lizzo. 

Moon man winner: Keke Plamer came out to present the Song of the Year award, which was won by Lil Nas X for his record-breaking hit song Old Town Road

Next level: He began by stating this was his ‘first award ever,’ and then he went on to thank Billy Ray Cyrus, who joined him on stage, for taking his career to the next level

Fashion designer Marc Jacobs took home the first ever MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award, thanking the network for giving artists a platform to express themselves.

‘From the moment I saw Video Killed the Radio Star, MTV, you gave artists the platform to express music and ideas through moving image and a dynamic source of inspiration,’ he said.

‘I thank you MTV. I am beyond flattered and proud to be the first-ever recipient of the Fashion Trailblazer,’ he said.
