Simon Gregson: Coronation Street’s Steve McDonald reveals ‘hidden’ health condition

Simon Gregson, 44, took to Twitter to reveal his struggles with anxiety and admitted he turned to therapy and medication to help him cope with the condition. The soap star spoke out after watching BBC documentary Nadiya: Anxiety and Me, in which winner of The Great British Bake Off Nadiya Hussain, 34, opened up about her own struggles with anxiety. The Coronation Street actor, who is best known for playing Steve McDonald, explained in view of his 244,000 followers: “This is real and awful to live with. “Please watch and understand it’s a hidden, awful emotion that effects far more than you’d think. But treatable and manageable with the right help.”

He continued: “Tablets work differently for different people. Mine worked with therapy.”

Giving advice to fans who are also battling the affliction, he added: “You need to find the right one for you.”

Simon also took the opportunity to reassure sufferers they were “not alone”.

The Corrie favourite then responded to a mother who informed the star about her teenage daughter who is “going through hell” with anxiety.

He replied: “Life is so complicated now. Too many pressures on our babies.

“Take a month go back to nature love and patience. One life. Enjoy embrace and love each other.”

Many of Simon’s fans also took to the comments section of his tweet to praise him for being so honest about his condition.

One wrote: “Amen to you Steve! I suffer with it everyday, but only my family know about it because I am not sure my friends would understand.”

Another added: “Thanks for this, it’s important xxx.”

A third replied: “Thank you for being a voice @simongregson123. It certainly is a hidden emotion. Very unpleasant when you are feeling anxious. But help is out there.”

A fourth tweeted: “I love that you’re sharing. People don’t understand it unless they’re close to it. I suffer with anxiety daily but cope with medication, mostly x.”

Simon previously admitted to battling depression in 2014 and was signed off work with an undisclosed illness for parts of the following year.

However, the actor recently told The Mirror about how he feels “more healthy and happy” in his 40s in comparison to earlier stages of his life.

He said: “I had to pinch myself the other day, a beautiful wife and three beautiful kids who are hilarious.

“Then you have everything else on top, I was like ‘wow’, life’s alright.

“I’m more healthy in my 40’s than I’ve ever been in my life, there’s many reasons for that which we won’t go into.

“I was like, it’s not going to get any better and accept what it is and get on with it.”

Coronation Street continues tonight at 7.30pm on ITV.
