Ander Herrera a January target for Athletic Bilbao as Manchester United contract runs down

The defensive midfielder spent three years with the Spanish club before moving to Manchester United in 2014 in a £29million deal.

But his stint at Old Trafford appears to be coming to an end with his contract expiring next summer.

The 29-year-old has made just one Premier League start this season and SunSport exclusively revealed how United are willing to let him leave on the cheap in January.

According to the Independent, Bilbao are closely monitoring his situation and could rival a host of Premier League clubs for his signature.

They would be able to agree a pre-contract with the player in January ahead of a transfer in the summer.

Herrera was born in Bilbao and may find the lure of returning home with his girlfriend and young daughter too hard to resist.

It is understood Everton have looked at bringing Herrera in to help their push towards the Europa League this season.

An Old Trafford source told The Sun: “There has already been a lot of interest in Ander from around Europe and England.

“There’s a growing feeling here that he is ready to walk away next summer and that’s something the club don’t want.

“The club obviously want to avoid that particular scenario and are trying to compromise and get a deal done."
