CHARLOTTETOWN – Brett Budgell scored in double overtime as the Charlottetown Islanders edged the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 3-2 on Friday to open up their Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff series.
Kevin Gursoy and Daniel Hardie had goals in regulation time for the Islanders, while Matthew Welsh made 41 saves in net.
Derek Gentile and Mitchell Balmas replied for the Screaming Eagles.
Kevin Mandolese turned aside 39 shots for Cape Breton.
Charlottetown went 1 for 5 on the power play and the Screaming Eagles could not score on their four man advantages.

BAIE-COMEAU, Que. — Christopher Benoit had the overtime winner as the Drakkar took a 1-0 series lead over Moncton.
Nathan Legare also scored for Baie-Comeau.
Charles-Antoine Giguere responded for the Wildcats.
OCEANIC 4 SAGUENEENS 3 (OT)
RIMOUSKI, Que. — Jimmy Huntington struck twice, including the overtime winner, as the Oceanic slipped past Chicoutimi for a 1-0 series lead.
Charle-Edouard D’Astous and Jeffrey Durocher rounded out the attack for Rimouski.
Theo Rochette had a pair of goals for the Sagueneens and Hendrix Lapierre also scored.
Chicoutimi’s Gabriel Villeneuve earned a game misconduct for checking to the head at 13:24 of the second period.

DRUMMONDVILLE, Que. — Anthony Morrone stopped all 17 shots he faced as the Voltigeurs blanked Gatineau to take a 1-0 series lead.
Joseph Veleno had a hat trick to lead Drummondville’s offence. Felix Lauzon also scored for the Voltigeurs.
Remi Poirier turned away 40 shots for Gatineau.

VICTORIAVILLE, Que. — Egor Serdyuk’s hat trick lifted the Tigres over Val-d’Or in Game 1 of their series.
Jordan Briere’s goal 9:52 into the third period was the winner for Victoriaville.
Felix Boivin and Yan Dion provided the offence for the Foreurs.
REMPARTS 3 MOOSEHEADS 2
HALIFAX — Pierrick Dube put away the winner at the 6:01 mark of the third period as Quebec topped the Mooseheads to claim a 1-0 series lead.
Matthew Grouchy and Luke Kutkevicius also scored for the Remparts.
Justin Barron and Jared McIsaac supplied the offence for Halifax.
ARMADA 5 PHOENIX 1
SHERBROOKE, Que. — Simon Pinard scored twice as Blainville-Boisbriand dumped the Phoenix in Game 1 of their series.
Cole Fraser’s goal 13:43 into the first period was the eventual winner for the Armada. Alexander Katerinakis and Blake Richardson chipped in as well.
Samuel Poulin was the lone scorer for Sherbrooke.
HUSKIES 4 CATARACTES 1
ROUYN-NORANDA, Que. — Justin Bergeron chipped in the game-winning goal as the Huskies took a 1-0 series lead over Shawinigan.
Alex Beaucage, Samuel Naud and Jakub Lauko also scored for Rouyn-Noranda.
Valentin Nussbaumer scored for the Cataractes.
