Unai Emery urges Mesut Ozil to up his game after German fails to impress new Arsenal boss

The Spaniard wants Ozil, the club’s £350,000-per-week star, to score and create more goals this season.

Emery said: “I want to find with him the possibility to do the best, to make decisive passes, to do more near and in the box to score.

“Also I think he is working for the team to help us with his quality.

“But he is feeling like I am feeling. He can improve, he can do more.

“In this process, we will work, we will help him, give him the possibility on the pitch to be together, to find his qualities for us.”

Ozil, 29, is set to make the first appearance of his career at St James’ Park when Arsenal visit Newcastle tomorrow.

Spaniard Emery said: “For me it is a new moment, for us and for every player.

“The reason we are working is to prepare each match with our players to have the possibility to arrive in Newcastle in the best condition for every player. That’s the same for Mesut.

“For the rest I want to push them, I want to be demanding to prepare this match – Mesut is the same.”

The past two weeks represent the first international break since World Cup winner Ozil abruptly decided to quit playing for Germany.

The playmaker, who is of Turkish origin, claimed he was the subject of “racism and disrespect” from the German FA as they crashed out of the World Cup group stage.

Ozil receives stick from fans and pundits for the inconsistency in his performances and a failure to play a more influential role.

Only once in his six years at the Emirates has he scored more than double figures across all competitions.

Yet Emery believes Ozil will benefit long-term from the time off during the season, when he is not playing for his country.

Emery said: “First the players have the habits to play in the international break, in important matches, defending their identity and when one player is finishing that, I think it’s also good for them to focus only on their team.

“The reason for Mesut is important for me also, this focus every day with us, a relaxing three days off at the weekend.

“Mesut, like other players, works very well here. I look at him with the focus totally here.

“The first time, maybe he could feel different (about missing Germany) but every day with us in the work, I look at him and he looks well and happy, working with our demands.”

Ozil may have started three of Arsenal’s four games this term but he was subbed off in two.
He was absent from the 3-1 home win over Chelsea last month with illness.

There were reports of a bust-up with the club management but Emery has always denied there was a rift.

Asked about the strength of their relationship, Emery replied: “(We get on) very well.

“I have a very good relationship with Mesut and professionally I push him for improvements to give us the best in his qualities and performances.”

Emery has demanded the Arsenal board sort out a new contract for left-back Nacho Monreal.

The Spain international is in the final year of his existing deal and Emery said: “We need to find a new contract with him to stay with the Arsenal team

“I am very happy with him because he is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level.”
