Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius needs Tommy John surgery, will miss part of 2019 season
Bad news for the Yankees came out of the Bronx on Friday morning, as the team announced that starting shortstop Didi Gregorius will need Tommy John surgery.
It is Gregorius' right (throwing) arm that is injured.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he believes it happened on a play during the American League Division Series games against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Fenway Park.
"We're optimistic he'll be back at some point (next) season,'' said Boone, adding that he feels Gregorius will play "the bulk of the season'' but they'll know more after surgery.
While Gleyber Torres is an option to play shortstop, Gregorius' injury could reshape the Yankees' plans for the offseason.
