Amazon Echo update brings terrifying new features to Alexa… don’t say we didn’t warn you
If you’re looking for something to go bump in the night for an extra chill on old All Hallows’ Eve tomorrow, Amazon has got a fiendishly good treat.
The Seattle-based company has added a number of spooky skills and frightening surprises to its Alexa smart assistant ahead of Halloween. Anyone with an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot with Clock, Echo Show, Echo Plus, or any of the plethora of other household appliances with the AI assistant (like microwaves!) will be able to test out the new features.
And you’ll get even more benefit from the spooky addition if you’ve kitted your house with smart technology, like Alexa-enabled plugs that allow you to switch-on or off whatever devices are plugged in with a simple voice command to your always-listening assistant.
Smart bulbs and Alexa-enabled smart plugs can be used to play ghoulish tricks on your friends and family from afar. You’ll be able to turn off the lights, switch on the fan to get the curtains eerie billowing infant of a closed window, as well as a number of other supernatural phenomenon thanks to Alexa routines.
These allow you to daisy-chain together a number of functions that can be triggered with a simple (optional Halloween-themed) order to Alexa.
If you’re not living in a home packed with smart home technology, there is still plenty of the fun to be had with the Halloween update.
Amazon lets you set a scene with creepy sounds – from creaking floorboards, howling winds, terrifying thunder and even blood-curdling screams – when you say “Alexa, start Halloween Ambience”. That’s perfect as a bit of light background ambience to any Halloween parties you might be having (after all, how many times can you listen to Thriller on any Halloween playlist?).
You can also bark out commands like “Alexa, ask Ghost Detector to catch a ghost” to play a small game with your friends where you can catch a ghost residing in your home. And for those who want to hear the chatty AI assistant’s best Halloween impressions – just wish Alexa a happy Halloween.
For those seeking out fun, rather than frights, play “Alexa, open Halloween Quiz” for freaky facts, or to become a potion master for the day, just ask “Alexa, open Magic Potion” to brew your own magical mix. And more a more sinister skill inspiration, just ask “Alexa, let’s get spooky”.
There are even more treacherous treats to discover with Alexa this Halloween, just ask “Alexa, …”
