Meet the TERRIFYING humanoid robot that can chase you down like the Terminator
You’ve probably had the nightmare of being chased down by some sort of murder machine attempting to eradicate you from time and space. Well good news, it’s now one step closer to being a reality.
Those clever, but terrifying, robotics experts at Boston Dynamics have once again created a machine that will haunt your nightmares. Atlas, described by the company as "The world’s most dynamic humanoid", can now do parkour!
In video posted to YouTube we get to see Atlas jumping from storage crate to storage crate. It even manages a jaunty little jump at one point, as if to say "suck it humans, I’m the parkour master now".
Atlas is made from 3D printed materials to save weight, it can carry a 11 kg load and it weighs just 75 kg. At 1.5m Atlas is a bit smaller than the average adult, but don’t let that fool you into complacency.
The robot has 28 joints which are moved with hydraulics and powered by a battery. It navigates the world using both LiDAR for object detection and also has stereo vision, helping it pick up objects on not fall over like a drunk student.
While it’s fun to imagine Atlas destroying humanity, the robot is actually designed to perform tasks that would put humans in too much danger. From driving a car to fighting fires, Atlas might actually be the early version of a robot that eventually saves your life.
Boston Dynamics was originally a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The company was sold to Google in 2013 while developing more advanced and creepily-lifelike robot horses and the like. In 2017 Japanese multinational Softbank purchased the company to add to its considerable portfolio of investments.
As alarming as these increasingly human robots are, none of them has ever bought a pair of crocs, so perhaps we should welcome our parkour-capable overlords?
