Brit backpacker, 25, has ‘brain abscess’ in Thailand after thinking it was ear infection

Rebekah Fulton – an Instagram influencer – remains under critical care in Phuket after being taken ill.

The 25-year-old’s family are frantically trying to raise money to bring her back to the UK.

Her dad James Geddes has revealed doctors fear she has developed a brain abscess.

NHS health advice reveals it causes swelling in the skull, can leave the victim brain damaged, and can be fatal.

James has said she is getting “weaker by the hour” as the GoFundMe fundraiser to transport her under medical care back to the UK reaches £20,000.

Rebekah has 7,000 followers on social media and regularly posed updates from her travels and adventures.

She had been travelling around Asia and Australia before settling down in the Thai island of Ko Phi Phi Don.

The fitness fan, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, had complained of an ear infection but the extent of her illness has only now become clear.

James was contacted by the hostel where she was staying to raise the alarm as she was struck down with the “serious brain infection”.

James has said the family are now in touch with a medical assistance company who are drawing up plans to return Rebekah to the UK.

He added his daughter is now sedated and may require “emergency surgery”.

“I have spoken with the senior doctor here specialising in infectious diseases who is treating Rebekah and she is doing her very best to identify the infection but it is proving very difficult,” he said.

“She is concerned that her initial ear infection has transferred to her brain and if this causes a cerebral abscess then emergency surgery will be required.”

James added: “Rebekah now requires to be sedated on a regular basis to keep her calm whilst the antibiotic treatment and testing continues and this is extremely distressing for her, myself, and her friend, who is also at her bedside.

“I would like to add that I am so grateful for the help and support given to Rebekah so far and I will up date again.”

Her dad immediately flew out to Thailand after she was taken ill – making the 5,890mile journey to be with Rebekah.

The family have set a target of £25,000 on their fundraiser, and pledged to donate any excess to a charity picked by Rebekah.

“Rebekah’s condition is very complex and I have been told that it’s a serious brain infection,” James told The Independent.

“There are still test results to be confirmed and that will be Tuesday as the tests are CSF cultures to identify the bacteria.
