Donald Trump to ‘make state visit to UK this June’ – White House announcement ‘imminent’
BBC North America Editor Jon Sopel tweeted: “I understand that the White House will announce in next 48 hours that Donald Trump will make a state visit to the UK in June.”
There is speculation that the trip could coincide with the 75th anniversary of D-Day so it would be over June 6.
The trip would be Trump’s second to the UK, following the four day official visit he made last July.
During the trip tens of thousands of people protested in central London against the US President’s policies.
House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has already said Trump will not be allowed to address both chambers of Parliament during any state visit.
Mr Bercow described making such an address as “not an automatic right, it is an earned honour”.
However defence minister was critical of the decision arguing Britain should “leverage” the President’s visit for maximum benefit.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph he said: “The special relationship matters.
“It is greater than any one individual, however controversial.
“So we should leverage the US President’s state visit, including the opportunity to formally address Parliament.”
