They have perfected spoons and and chopsticks which deliver mild shocks to the taste buds.
That fools users into thinking curries are spicer, puds sweeter and spuds saltier.
Controlling the current’s frequency and strength tweaks sourness, saltiness and bitterness.
Dr Nimesha Ranasinghe, of the University of Maine, US, said: “By applying electric salt to mashed potato, the overall flavour is enhanced.
“We have some early findings of simulating sweetness, a mint-cool sensation and hot or spicy.”
The team are now working on knives and forks.Britain’s National Obesity Forum said: “It could be a significant step in stemming the current crisis.”
