‘Real reason’ Camilla isn’t going to niece Princess Eugenie’s wedding
Princess Eugenie will wed her long-term partner, wine merchant Jack Brooksbank, today in a fairytale wedding at Windsor Castle.
It comes just five months after Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in the same chapel at the Queen’s Windsor home.
But one family member will be notably absent from Eugenie’s nuptials this morning: her aunt, Camilla Parker-Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall.
Camilla cited a diary clash as the reason she couldn’t attend her brother-in-law’s daughter’s wedding.
Today she will be in Scotland visiting a school near Balmoral, the royal family’s summer home.
Crathie primary school has just 12 pupils and has had a long-established relationship with the royals due to its proximity to the castle.
The Queen Mother used to send Princess Margaret’s birthday cake for the pupils to share and every Christmas they receive a present from the Queen.
It is for this reason that Camilla’s commitment to the appointment has come as a surprise to some people in the town.
One local reportedly said: "We are used to seeing the royals out and about — they are part of the Crathie community — and frankly they could drop in at any time.
"I don’t think anyone would have been too startled if the engagement was cancelled because of the wedding."
There is speculation that underlying tensions between Camilla and the Duke of York may be to blame for her missing the nuptials.
According to Kay, insiders have long said that the Duchess feels Prince Andrew "did not speak up for her and Charles" when they were battling to get acceptance of their relationship inside the family after Diana’s death.
A close figure to her reportedly said that Camila "has always felt Andrew could have done more" and went as far to say he was "deeply unhelpful".
Prince Charles will depart for Scotland after the wedding lunch, missing the black-tie dinner thrown by his brother.
Many have commended Camilla for putting her royal duty before her own pleasure.
Friends say the Duchess is ‘very disappointed’ she can’t attend the wedding and is ‘very fond of Beatrice and Eugenie’.
Royal expert Richard Kay also claims Camilla sent a handwritten letter to Eugenie apologising for being unable to attend.
She explained that she had committed to visit a local school and didn’t want to let the children down.
