Where is Thousand Oaks, what happened at the California shooting and how many are injured?

The shooting rampage took place at a restaurant and nightclub in the town of Thousand Oaks late on Wednesday, November 7. Here's the latest.

Where is Thousand Oaks?

Thousand Oaks is a town in Ventura County, California.

A population of around 130,000, it is part of the Greater Los Angeles area and is about 40 miles from downtown LA.

According to the FBI, Thousand Oaks is one of the safest cities in America.

It was ranked as the fourth safest among cities with a population greater than 100,000 in the United States by the FBI's 2013 Uniform Crime Reports.

Has the Borderline Bar shooting suspect been arrested?

The shooting suspect was a war veteran suffering from PTSD, and was armed with a handgun and smoke grenades.

He was named by NBC News as Ian Long, 28. The tattooed suspect was wearing a black trenchcoat and a ski mask when he stormed the venue packed with students.

Long was killed by in a shootout with cops at the Borderline bar, shortly after he killed a cop.

Officials said Long died from a single gunshot wound after exchanging fire with police at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks – 40 minutes drive from Los Angeles.

How many victims are there?

Twelve people were killed including a Ventura Country Sheriff's deputy. The gunman was also killed.

Witnesses told ABC News that a man fired several shots from a handgun into the crowd before tossing the smoke grenade and starting to fire again.

John Hodge told ABC7 he saw the suspect throwing smoke grenades into the front of the restaurant after shooting a security guard.

John, who was at the front door, said: "I just started hearing these big pops. Pop, pop, pop.

"There was probably three or four, I hit the ground. I look up – the security guard is dead.

“Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot. He was down.

“The gunman was throwing smoke grenades all over the place.”


John’s stepdad Tom described seeing the shooter firing at a “young girl.”

He said: “He shot the front doorman, who was just a young man.

“Then he shot the cashier, just a young girl.

"Then he started moving to the right. He wasn't looking at us.

“Then he went into the office, where all the cash and stuff is.

"He didn't say anything at all. He just started shooting.”
