The presenter, who is now happily married to husband Mark Cassidy, 36, said that she expected to come off-air to a ‘barrage of negativity and disapproval’ but instead she didn’t receive any.

Carol added that she knew from a ‘very young age’ that she didn’t ever want children after watching her single mother struggle with four kids under six.

The star revealed that she had always been open about her first termination aged 28 but didn’t tell anyone when she got pregnant at 38 after a one-night stand.

Carol admitted that she didn’t even mention it in her 2010 autobiography, Oh, Carol!, as she was ’embarrassed’ at the time.

Writing for The Sun, she said: ‘That doesn’t mean I was ashamed of what I did, but an unexplained mishap ten years earlier could be excused, whereas having it happen a second time, well, there was no excuse.’

Carol added that she had been on the pill both times when she accidentally got pregnant and was worried people wouldn’t believe her.

She added that she only stopped taking birth control in 2003 after her mother died and her libido ‘vanished’ for seven years.

Carol revealed that her first termination was with her boyfriend who supported her throughout the procedure.

The presenter added that her second pregnancy, aged 38, was ‘more complicated’ as it was after a one-night stand while she was seeing someone else.

Carol didn’t tell anyone, including the guy, she said: ‘I mean, what would have been the point? His opinion simply didn’t matter to me because I had no intention of allowing myself to be connected to him for the rest of my life by carrying on with the pregnancy and having his baby.’

She continued: ‘That’s why I kept schtum. But to say I’m not ashamed doesn’t mean I’m proud of what I did either.’

Carol added that she is not ‘totally heartless’ and she feels for the women who are struggling to get pregnant.

Although the presenter insisted that she does not regret her decisions and has only thought about what could have happened once.

Carol revealed she would have had a 22 and 32-year-old, which ‘seems ridiculous’, although she quipped that she might have aged ‘a little more gracefully’.

In July, the presenter revealed on Loose Women that she has had two terminations during a discussion about the dropping fertility rates for women under 30 in England and Wales.

During the chat, Carol said that she has been pregnant twice and decided to terminate both of her pregnancies.

The ITV star, who presented from home via video link, shared that one of her pregnancies happened when she was 38 after a one-night stand.

Carol, who is now happily married to husband Mark Cassidy, insisted that she is ‘not ashamed’ of her decision.

She told fellow panellists Kaye Adams, Jane Moore and Judi Love: ‘I did get pregnant, twice, and I did have two terminations. I’m not ashamed of that.

The panel: She told fellow panellists Kaye Adams, Judi Love and Jane Moore (L-R): ‘I did get pregnant, twice, and I did have two terminations. I’m not ashamed of that.’

‘Some people might disagree that wasn’t a good idea. But I was 38 when I had the second one and I think, it was a very simple decision for me to make, it was very easy.’

Carol explained: ‘It was a one-night stand, believe it or not, at 38. Yeah, I took a long time to grow up.

‘I got pregnant and I think it was my body saying to me, “Look, you’re running out of time. You better get on with this.” I think that is what was happening.’

Carol went on to talk about the dropping fertility rates for women under 30 in England and Wales.

She said that people in their 20s worry about the future, planet and world, which is impacting their choice to have children.

Carol went on to lament the fact she is called a ‘cougar’ for being married to Mark and it is ‘rude’ that he is called a ‘toy boy’ for their 24-year age gap.

She quipped: ‘Cougar sounds predatory, like I’m chasing down the street after young men. I’ve never done that!

‘Toy boy, makes him sound like a play thing. Just stop it with these labels everyone has!’

She added: ‘I got pregnant and I think it was my body saying to me, “Look, you’re running out of time. You better get on with this.” I think that is what was happening.’

Carol recently revealed details of her wedding, which took place in secret in Bangkok back in 2018.

She said: ‘We did it entirely in secret a year ago. We did it on our own, just us two, no one at all, it had to be all or nothing.

‘After we came back, we thought we won’t tell everyone just yet. We liked it being a secret, a secret we carried on until we thought it’s getting awkward now.

‘We did tell all close friends and family over the year, we had a little celebration with it, close family and friends, we probably missed a few out.’

Carol was previously married to radio and TV presenter Chris Evans. The couple exchanged vows in 1991 before separating three-years later, with their divorce finalised in 1998.

Official figures revealed last month that fertility rates for women under 30 in England and Wales have dropped to a record low,.

But data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the number of over-40s giving birth has risen to a record-high.

Some 29,618 women over 40 had a child in 2019 — at a rate of 16.5 births per 1,000 women, more than triple the figure of 5.3 in 2000.

Women are increasingly putting off starting a family in their twenties when they are more fertile, often delaying motherhood to focus on their careers.

Figures show overall the number of births are falling — but older women are the only age group that is bucking the trend.

The conception rate among women aged 40 and over has been climbing since 1977, according to the ONS.

And the average age of a woman giving birth in England and Wales in 2019 was 30.7 — the oldest since records began 90 years ago.

But fewer than one in every 10 women under between the ages of 25 and 30 had a baby last year, a record-low figure.

Loose Women continues on weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
