Claudia Winkleman has explained her dedication to her hairstyle, quipping that her signature fringe launched both her TV career and her sex life.

Speaking on the first night of her aptly named Behind The Fringe tour in Guildford, Surrey on Monday night, the Strictly Come Dancing presenter, 50, admitted she has stuck to her style rules for decades.

‘People ask, ‘Did you always have a fringe?’. And yes I did,’ she told the audience, quipping: ‘People ask what I am hiding with my fringe — and it’s a massive forehead that is repellent.’

Claudia said she got her fringe aged 21 and that’s when life shifted.

‘I was born with six extra teeth like a little dinosaur. When people saw me smile they screamed,’ she told the crowd. ‘But when I was 21 and a virgin, I got my fringe and everything started happening.’

Claudia, the daughter of journalist Eve Pollard read history of art at Cambridge before entering the world of TV as a travel presenter and reporter for shows such as This Morning in the early nineties.

She moved to bigger presenting roles, fronting the likes of Fame Academy and Liquid News before getting her big break on the BBC in 2005 when she started hosting Strictly spin off show It Takes Two.

Fast forward to 2009 and she stepped in at the last minute to present Strictly alongside Tess Daly when regular host Bruce Forsyth caught the flu, leading, a year later, to the regular role as co-host of the Sunday night results show.

She also replaced Bruce on Saturday nights following his departure in 2014.

Claudia has been married to film producer Kris Thykier for 22 years after they met when she was a 24-year-old newbie in The TV world. They share three children.

As well as her fringe, the TV star is also known for her dedication to fake tan, which she said she has ‘always been addicted to.’

Back in the day: Claudia previously posted a childhood shot of herself on Instagram, showing she sported a fringe as a young girl

‘I like being orange, I think it is because I was born in 1972, I am an eighties kid so everything was like ultra glow,’ she told the audience on her Monday night tour date.

While she has her signature style that has made her a fashion icon, the presenter added that she relies on one very influential fashion queen to guide her everyday

‘When you leave the house just think ‘What would Kate Moss do?’ If she would be happy then you can be happy.

‘These are the things I want you to do. Great boots, thank you Kate, skinny jeans, again thank you Kate. An oversized coat, Kate knows what she is doing,’ she said.

And as for her love of eyeliner, she advised: ‘When you put it on and think ‘That is enough’ you have not even begun.’

The night on tour also saw Claudia reveal the secrets of her Strictly wardrobe, admitting that she and the team base each theme each series’ style.

‘At Strictly, I have never told anybody this, we always base my outfits on a different theme,’ Claudia revealed. ‘It could be a person or a place. One year I was Andre Agassi when I had long bits in my hair and we put turf in my dressing room.’

Among the other names Claudia has channelled include Pam St Clement, Slash from Guns n Roses, Joan Rivers , Sharon Osbourne and Rob Kardashian.

In February, during an appearance on The One Show to promote her tour, Claudia was confronted with a photo of herself without her fringe.

Hosts Alex Jones and Ronan Keating presented Claudia with the snap taken from her modelling days,

‘Is that actually me?’ Claudia gasped. ‘That’s disgusting,’ she added. ‘Let’s take it off.’

The presenter was then asked if she would consider going blonde. ‘I only work because of the hair,’ she said. ‘I can’t change it.’
