Gigi Hadid’s Vogue Italia cover slammed with some accusing image of ‘black face’
Vogue Italia has been slammed for using “black face” on its latest cover image of model Gigi Hadid.
The image, taken by star photographer Steven Klein, shows a deeply tanned Hadid in the arms of male model Justin Martin.
A sultry-looking Hadid is wearing a striking sequined jumpsuit by Dolce and Gabbana that appears to show Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts.
Fans of the 23-year-old style icon took to Instagram, complaining that Hadid looked unrecognizable and accusing the magazine of digitally altering her normally pale skin tone.
“Looks nothing like her, looks like she overdid it on the tan,” said one commenter.
One sardonic Instagram user said: “Why hire a black model when we can paint Gigi’s complete body and face to look like one …”
Another Hadid fan was more blunt: “I love you but wtf is this mess.”
It’s not the first time Vogue Italia and Hadid have been accused of using “black face” on a magazine cover.
The model attracted criticism after she was photographed for the magazine by fashion legend Steven Meisel in November 2015.
The cover shoot — dubbed “The power of personality” — showed Hadid sporting a noticeably darker skin tone while wearing various Afro-style wigs.
