Harry Potter, Spongebob Squarepants, and Mean Girls Lead the 2018 Tony Awards Nominations

We’ve hit the annual lull in award shows, so naturally it’s time for Broadway stars to do what they do best and take the stage—only this time, for the 2018 Tony Awards. If you’re a theater kid, listen up, because the 2018 Tony Awards nominations are here, and they celebrate all the best from childhood.

The 72nd annual Tony Awards ceremony is set to take place on June 10 at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by none other than Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban. It’s undoubtedly Broadway’s biggest night of the year, and now, fans know who has gotten a nod.

Hamilton star and Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. and Waitress star Katharine McPhee announced the nominees on Tuesday morning, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Angels in America, The Band’s Visit, Mean Girls, Spongebob Squarepants, and My Fair Lady were all recognized.

Last year was full of memorable moments that take on new light in hindsight. On an uncomfortable note, last year’s host Kevin Spacey—who is currently under investigation for a third sexual assault—poked at rumors about his sexuality while being featured in an opening medley of the year’s four Best Musical nominees.

Much more positively, Cynthia Nixon—who is now running for governor of New York—took home a Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play, and she used the opportunity to take a stand.

“Eighty years ago, [Hellman] wrote, ‘There are people who eat the earth and eat all the people on it, and other people who just stand around and watch them do it.’ My love, my gratitude and my undying respect go out to all the people in 2017 who are refusing to just stand and watch them do it,” she said.
