Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara ask people not to eat turkeys

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara ask people to ADOPT turkeys in lieu of eating them this Thanksgiving

Joaquin Phoenix, 47, and fiancée Rooney Mara, 36, have a small ask this holiday season.

Just days before Thanksgiving, the couple is urging people to adopt turkeys in lieu of eating them as part of the traditional holiday meal.

Last weekend the pair stopped by Farm Sanctuary in Acton, California, where they spent time with a slew of loving rescue birds.

Sharing with People the engaged duo said, ‘Turkeys are emotional, intelligent, and social animals. It’s chilling that more than 68 million turkeys will be brutally slaughtered and eaten during the holiday months alone.’

Their joint statement is part of their support for the sanctuary’s Adopt a Turkey initiative.

Their manifesto continued: ‘By adopting a turkey through Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt a Turkey Project, you are not only supporting the rescue of animals caught in the brutal factory farming industry, but you are also protesting animal agriculture’s immoral treatment of workers, and its dominating role in accelerating the climate crisis.’

The call-to-action concluded, ‘In this season of giving, please join us in adopting a turkey, and leaving them off your plates.’

The new parents are devout vegans who are dedicated to spreading the message of the benefits of a plant-based diet.

The soon-to-be husband and wife recently joined forces with another vegan, pop star Billie Eilish, to ask President Joe Biden to reroute spared turkeys to the California organization instead of placing them elsewhere like farms and zoos.

Joaquin and Rooney share one-year-old son River Phoenix, who was named in memory of the actor’s late brother.

Up next, they’ll star in Lynne Ramsay’s film Polaris.

The couple began dating in 2016.
