It is understood that Ms Perry agreed to appear in the concert the night after the coronation service at Westminster Abbey because she wants to highlight her work as an Ambassador of the British Asian Trust, a role to which she was appointed by the King in 2020.

Ms Perry will join a list of stars which includes Take That, Lionel Richie, Andrea Bocelli, Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, singer/songwriter Freya Ridings and classical soul artist Alexis Ffrench.

Performers will have their expenses covered but it is not known if they acts received an appearance fee on top.

The show, produced by BBC Studios – the same organisers behind the Platinum Jubilee concert – will feature an eclectic mix of pop, rock and classical music and will be beamed around the world along with a spectacular light display.

Of all the stars on the bill, Katy Perry is likely to be seen as the most high profile globally.

Perry and her entourage will have a run of suites in the historic castle, where the concert is to be performed on Sunday, May 7

The singer first met the King at an event in Mumbai in 2019 when he was then Prince of Wales.

The meeting was no doubt memorable for both of them because it was the first – and probably last time – the King has ever asked anyone for a selfie.

Details of the picture request were revealed by the King’s former aide Scott Furssedonn-Wood.

Mr Furssedonn-Wood, who was deputy private secretary to Charles, told the King how much his children loved Ms Perry’s music.

The King then stepped in and asked the singer to pose with his aide.

Mr Furssedonn-Wood, who is now High Commissioner to Barbados and Eastern Caribbean, posted details of the encounter on Twitter, saying: ‘Exciting that @KatyPerry is performing at #CoronationConcert.

‘I was with The King in Mumbai in 2019 when he first met her. I had told him how much my kids loved her.

‘Those of us in the team never asked for selfies. So HRH kindly asked for me “He and his family are such fans!”’

Katy Perry has previously joined the King’s sons Princes William and Harry on their Heads Together mental health campaign, taking part in an awareness video.

Since then she has become closer to Harry – geographically, at least.

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to the celebrity enclave Montecito where Katy Perry and her British fiancé Orlando Bloom are neighbours.

Bloom voiced the part of Prince Harry in a controversial cartoon called The Prince.

Bloom said that Harry was ‘aware’ that he would be portraying his neighbour in the HBO Max programme, which was described by critics as a ‘savage’ portrayal of the Duke.

In an interview, Bloom said: ‘Initially, I was like, ‘Hmm, how do I feel about this,’ because I’m a British boy who’s very proud of my roots.’

He added of Harry: ‘This guy is so nice and I think he’s got a great sense of humour. I hope he maintains that through this because they’re sort of on a pedestal. We’re showing real adoration to them in one form or another.

‘I try to justify it, because quite frankly, if I’m honest, it’s not like me to poke fun at anyone but it is done with affection.’

Katy Perry was previously known for having criticised the fitting of Meghan’s wedding dress.

Speaking about the Royal Wedding in 2018 she said: ‘I would have done one more fitting. I’m never not going to tell the truth! One more fitting, but I love you. Kate, Kate, Kate won, Kate won!’

An LA-based celebrity booking agent said it is not unusual for performers to receive luxury ‘add ons’ in exchange for their services.

The man, who has worked with Ms Perry as well as other A-list names including Beyonce, said: ‘People like Beyonce and Katy get invited to all sorts of things. I had one celebrity client who was invited to perform in the Middle East and, even though the money was huge, it wasn’t something she particularly wanted to do. Then the host offered an all-expenses-paid desert safari by camel and a private jet to and from the event and that clinched it. But this is on a different scale. Who else can say they’ve been invited by the King to spend the night in his castle? I mean, those are some bragging rights.’
