Maria Sharapova announces she’s expecting first child with fiance Alexander Gilkes in 35th birthday post: ‘Precious beginnings!’

Maria Sharapova is expecting her first child with fiance Alexander Gilkes.

The retired tennis champion made the announcement on her 35th birthday in a post shared with her 4.2million followers.

‘Precious beginnings!!! Eating birthday cake for two has always been my specialty,’ captioned Maria, who included a snap of herself cradling her bump on the beach.

She had on an orange bandeau top and a pair of dark sweatpants.

Maria’s golden blonde hair was worn down and she had sunglasses over her eyes as she smiled for the camera.

Though she waited to share her baby news until Tuesday, Maria was spotted seemingly cloaking her baby bump under a brown coat while out in Malibu, California on April 6.

Maria began dating Alexander, 42, in 2018.

They made their major red carpet debut as a couple at the 2019 Met Gala.

The British businessman proposed to the five-time Grand Slam tennis champion in December 2020. He presented her with a dazzling £300,000 diamond engagement ring.

‘I said yes from the first day we met ❤️ This was our little secret, wasn’t it @gilkesa,’ wrote Maria, who announced their engagement on Instagram.

She included a slideshow of sweet snapshots, as well as a video of herself twirling on the sidewalk.

Taking to his own Instagram page, Alexander thanked his fiancee for ‘making me a very very happy boy and saying yes’ to his proposal.

The art dealer continued: ‘I look forward to a lifetime of loving you, and learning from you @mariasharapova’

Alexander included a black-and-white photo of himself and Maria, as well as a gorgeous solo shot of the retired tennis star. 

Speaking with MSN.com in September 2021, Maria admitted at the time that the pair ‘haven’t set a date’ due to ‘so many uncertainties’ amid the coronavirus pandemic.

‘We actually haven’t discussed it yet because we want our friends and family to be comfortable in an environment and not feel like they have to attend something,’ she explained.

Maria’s life has undergone a number of changes over the past two years, including retiring from tennis in February 2020.

In a statement published to Vanity Fair, the athlete wrote that she was ‘saying goodbye’ to the sport that made her a household name. 

‘How do you leave behind the only life you’ve ever known? How do you walk away from the courts you’ve trained on since you were a little girl, the game that you love – one which brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys – a sport where you found a family, along with fans who rallied behind you for more than 28 years?

‘I’m new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis – I’m saying goodbye,’ she concluded.
