Martin Roberts, 57, has been inundated with support after sharing the heartbreaking news that his pet dog Rolo has died after battling advanced inflamed bowel disease. He explained Rolo had been put to sleep, as there was no cure for his condition.

The Homes Under The Hammer presenter took to Twitter to post the update after telling fans the four-year-old Labradoodle had been in and out of the vets with “stomach problems”.

He also shared a collage of photos of Rolo, including one of the star cuddling his pet pooch.

Martin’s former co-star Lucy Alexander, 51, was one of many who replied to his emotional post last night, as she shared her condolences.

The BBC host penned in view of his 26,000 followers: “I’m sorry to have to share the unbearably sad news that Rolo has just been put to sleep.

“He had advanced inflamed bowel disease and had deteriorated rapidly.

“There was no cure and they said it was the kindest thing.”

Despite the knowledge that the decision was the best thing to do for his family’s beloved dog, Martin admitted he was “distraught and heartbroken” over the loss.

He added: “I am in shock, distraught and heartbroken. I loved him so much x.”

Lucy, who worked with Martin on Homes Under The Hammer for 15 years, was one of the first to console the star over Rolo’s death.

She wrote: “So sorry,” alongside a crying face emoji.

Lucy was joined by Martin’s fans, with one person commenting: “Oh, Martin, I am so very sorry. My heart hurts for you, it really does. What a gorgeous boy.”

Another added: “I’m so sorry you have lost your wonderful friend. We’re so privileged to receive their love and loyalty for a too short span of time. Rolo wouldn’t want you to be unhappy when you think of him. Brave decision XX.”

A third fan replied: “So sorry Martin, feeling your pain. They give so much and then take a part of us away with them. You’ve done the right thing and you know it. Huge respect for making such a hard decision. Big hug.”

A fourth said: “It’s so hard to say goodbye to your faithful companion. Run free beautiful boy.”

A fifth wrote: “I’m so sorry, our babies are so much more than just pets. I know it’s difficult to say goodbye but you did the selfless thing and put his comfort and needs first.”

It comes after Martin asked his social media followers for advice on how to get his pooch to eat, after he returned home from the vets with no appetite earlier this week.

“Can you offer any advice for my poorly dog?” he asked alongside a video.

In the clip, Martin told fans he’d given Rolo all the food he usually enjoys, but he wasn’t interested in eating any of it.

After sharing the post, Martin took to Twitter again and thanked fans for their support.

He said: “I just wanted to say thank you to everybody for all your kind words and suggestions about Rolo, it means a lot.

“I’ve tried everything and he’s just not having it. He’s gone back to the vets who have access to some special treatments.”

The presenter also added that he was shocked by how much his vet bills costed, admitting: “It’s a bit of a scandal though, because when they tell you how much it is going to cost and then they give you an idea… you don’t want to know honestly!”
