‘I’m gutted’: Supernatural star Jared Padalecki blindsided by news of prequel The Winchesters developed by co-star Jensen Ackles

The CW confirmed Thursday that it’s greenlit a Supernatural prequel The Winchesters.

But actor Jared Padalecki appeared to have been blindsided by the news of the spin-off which has been developed by his co-star Jensen Ackles and his wife Danneel.

Retweeting Jensen’s announcement, Jared wrote: ‘Dude. Happy for you. Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter.’

Jared went on:  ‘I’m excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever.’

When asked by a fan if he was joking about not knowing about the prequel, Jared tweeted: ‘No. It’s not. This is the first I’ve heard about it.’

‘I’m gutted,’ he added.

No courtesy call: Retweeting Jensen’s announcement, Jared revealed he had only learned of the spin-off from their hugely successful and long-running series via Twitter

The series ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020.

The prequel will focus on the backstory to the brothers – how their parents John and Mary met, fell in love and set out to save the world.

Jensen will serve as narrator for the new show in character as Dean Winchester.

He developed the premise with his wife Danneel, 42, who had a recurring role on Supernatural from 2018 to 2020.

Speaking to Deadline.com Thursday, Jensen explained that he knew that the end of Supernatural would not be the end of the saga.

‘When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story,’ he said.

‘I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.’

In Supernatural, John and Mary Winchester were by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith and were written out early on in the series.

Mary was killed by a demon when Jared’s character Sam was still a baby.

John became a hunter as he investigated her death and passed his skills and knowledge onto his two sons. He was killed off in the season 2 premiere.
