Tina Fey cried in the gym over ‘Mean Girls’ Tony nominations
News that the “Mean Girls” musical was nominated for 12 Tonys came to Tina Fey mid-sweat.
“I was at the gym, because fitness is my life,” Fey joked on the “Today” show Thursday.
“I was afraid to watch [the nominations] on TV so my friend was with me and he was scrolling through the internet and as all this good news was raining down on us, I starting crying, I cried in the middle of Equinox,” she recalled.
The stage adaptation of her 2004 hit starring Lindsay Lohan, which made its Broadway debut on April 8, was nominated in major categories including for best musical and best book of a musical.
“I never cried over an Emmy or Golden Globe,” Fey told Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb. “It must have meant more to me than I realized because I’m just so proud of this show and everyone involved.”
Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond, who wrote the score, leads Taylor Louderman (who plays Regina George) and Grey Henson (Damian) were all nominated.
