Fuming Denmark striker Martin Braithwaite blasts England penalty decision and admits 'I have to be careful what I say'

MARTIN BRAITHWAITE reacted to England's controversial penalty by fuming: 'I have to be careful what I say'.

The Three Lions were awarded a spot kick during extra time against Denmark last night.

But replays showed that minimal contact was made on Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane stepped up, burying the rebound after a superb Kasper Schmeichel save.

And the goal proved to be the winner, as England ran out 2-1 victors, booking their place in Sunday's final against Italy.

After the match, Barcelona forward Braithwaite, 30, said: "We have to swallow that.

"We are proud, but also incredibly disappointed in the way it happened.

"I don't think it was entirely fair, but I have to be careful what I say."

Three Lions fans have rejoiced and Braithwaite admitted that he felt that the match being played at Wembley 'could have had an influence' on referee Danny Makkelie's decision to award the spot kick.

Braithwaite then added: "There is no one to blame, there was no penalty and it was judged a bit harshly.

"We don't know if it went to Maehle or Mathias, but Maehle has been fantastic in this tournament and that's what one will remember."

The ex-Middlesbrough striker was gutted, but also felt pride at what Denmark had achieved through adversity this summer.

He continued: "Now, I am disappointed, but we have many excellent experiences and we are very grateful for the support we have received.

"It has been moving and something we have never experienced."

The Danes lost their first two games, after talisman Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch against Finland on matchday one.

But they came roaring back, battering the Russians 4-1 to squeeze through Group B – before similarly stuffing the Welsh in the Round of 16.

Denmark overcame surprise packages the Czech Republic 2-1 in the quarter-finals, before narrowly losing out to England last night.
