Jockey Ben Curtis stood down on Saturday after dislocating his shoulder WHILE riding winner at Newcastle

TOP jockey Ben Curtis performed miracles in the saddle on Friday night when riding a winner with a DISLOCATED shoulder.

Championship-chasing Curtis popped his shoulder out of it's socket in the closing stages – but still managed to get his horse home in front.

He was riding the Henry Spiller-trained 5-1 shot Crack Regiment in a one-mile race at Newcastle when he suffered the injury.

The horse travelled strongly through the race and looked set to win easily under a confident-looking Curtis.

But when he went to use his whip on the four-year-old, he suffered the painful injury.

He was unable to move his right arm in the final 100 yards of the race.

But he managed to push the horse into a narrow lead with just his left hand.

And the horse scraped home to win by a head in a photo-finish.

Curtis was clearly in a lot of pain when he dismounted the horse in the winners' enclosure.

He was stood down by docs for the rest of Friday's night's card, and he was also replaced on a big book of rides at Newcastle on Saturday.

Curtis revealed after the race that it wasn't the first time he has dislocated his shoulder during a race.

He said: "Everything is good, I have no pain at my end.

“It was a shame really, the race went absolutely perfect up until that point. I just went to give him one reminder and my shoulder popped out, which made it a little bit uncomfortable in the last 100 yards. Luckily we still won but it wasn’t an ideal situation.

“Your arm just goes limp and it just feels like a dead weight. There’s not much you can do, I was just trying to keep him straight with one arm. The arm is fairly useless at that point.

“I’ve done it before, coincidentally at Newcastle, it really dropped down a long way and was very painful, but yesterday it hadn’t dropped too far.

"It was painful, I spent the next five minutes trying to persuade someone to put it back in but no one would take the risk and I was shipped off to hospital."

Winning trainer Spiller was quick to Tweet his appreciation on social media.

He said: "What a performance by Ben Curtis who rode him to the line despite dislocating his shoulder during the race.

"Hope you’re OK Ben. Unbelievable ride under the circumstances."

Punters also shared their astonishment at Curtis' heroics in the saddle.

One said: "Ben Curtis dislocated his shoulder and won despite only being able to use one arm, jockeys are such a different breed."

Another said: "Amazing result, Ben Curtis riding through the pain barrier."

While another added: "Ouch. Bravo, Ben Curtis, what a jockey."
