Joel Matip is Liverpool's only fit centre-back and Jurgen Klopp is expected to be out to bolster his options in the January transfer window.
Betfair have priced up Schalke's Ozan Kabak as the 3/1 favourite sign for Liverpool in January.
He is firmly the frontrunner in their eyes ahead of Napoli ace Kalidou Koulibaly and RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano.
The Reds showed interest in signing a defender in the summer but a move never materialised.
Defenders to sign for Liverpool in January
- Ozan Kabak 3/1
- Malick Thiaw 8/1
- Ben White 8/1
- Kalidou Koulibaly 5/1
- Dayot Upamecano 6/1
- Jan Vertonghen 10/1
- Diego Carlos 6/
Liverpool were linked with Kabak last summer but held back from making a formal bid.
The Schalke star is highly rated in Germany and has a big future ahead of him at just 20 years of age.
He is expected to cost Liverpool in the region of £40m.
Gomez has since undergone succesful surgery on a knee tendon injury, Liverpool have confirmed.
But Gomez is expected to make a full recovery after the operation uncovered no ligament damage to his knee.
