Cure for hearing loss as tech company develops breakthrough deafness treatment

People with hearing loss or deafness could soon hear again thanks to a revolutionary new treatment that does away with hearing aids and cochlear implants.

An American tech company, Frequency Therapeutics, claims to have discovered a new effective hearing loss treatment which can help people hear again after a single injection.

In a 200-person clinical trial, the company injected small particles into patients' ears, which transforms cells in the ear into hairs that can help people hear again.

The trial reported 'meaningful' improvement in hearing for many of the patients, with some saying their hearing and speech perception improved for nearly two years after one injection.

Speech perception is the ability to understand others' speech and recognise words, and is one of the main goals for people who wish to treat their hearing loss.

One of the company's founders, Jeff Karp, said: “Hearing is such an important sense; it connects people to their community and cultivates a sense of identity.

"I think the potential to restore hearing will have enormous impact on society.”

The company is now recruiting for another 124-trial next year which should help further develop the technology.

Karp hopes that the research will make it possible to treat hearing loss quickly in future.

"I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 or 15 years, because of the resources being put into this space and the incredible science being done, we can get to the point where [reversing hearing loss] would be similar to Lasik surgery, where you're in and out in an hour or two and you can completely restore your vision. I think we'll see the same thing for hearing loss," he said.
