How to watch YouTube on an Apple Watch with new app
The Apple Watch is a great tool for fitness, notifications and responding to calls and messages.
But have you ever thought about watching video on it?
Probably not. Nevertheless, thanks to the launch of a new app you can turn the 1.9-inch screen on the latest Apple Watch Series 7 into a tiny YouTube window.
A new app called WatchTube lets you browse the video site directly from your wrist.
The app doesn’t require any input from your phone. You can download it directly to the watch from the watchOS App Store.
As you’d expect for a watch app, the interface has been stripped back a fair bit. You’ve got four different sections to swipe through: Home, Search, Library and Settings.
WatchTube works locally on your wrist so you can’t link it to your YouTube account to find creators you subscribe to. However, the search option works surprisingly well and you can use either dictation or scribble to find videos you want.
Amazingly, WatchTube also supports closed captions and will let you change the text size. Audio will play either out of the Apple Watch’s built-in speaker or through any Bluetooth headphones you’ve got connected.
According to the developer, an update is in the works that will allow for an audio-only mode. That means you can listen to songs on YouTube without having to have the Apple Watch display turned on.
You may not have bought an Apple Watch with the expectation of on-the-go video, but it’s nice to know the option is there.
