NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars Thursday, accomplishing the riskiest step yet in an epic quest to bring back rocks that could answer whether life ever existed on Mars.

Colorado was well represented as part of the mission by companies large and small. The rover is carrying equipment and technology developed by some of the state’s largest aerospace companies as well as a Broomfield business that is making its first foray into space.

Assembly and machine shop crews along with engineers watched the successful landing from the Air Squared facilities in Broomfield on Thursday afternoon. Air Squared designed and built an Atmospheric Scroll Compressor for an oxygen converter called the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) instrument on the Mars Rover.

The aeroshell containing the car-sized Perseverance was built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems at its Jefferson County complex.
