Some Sky TV customers WILL get the update they’ve been desperate for tomorrow
Sky announced a radical update top its popular Sky Q set-top box last month and since the news was announced the firm has been busy pushing out this upgrade to customers across the UK. To make sure things run smoothly, this update can’t be released to millions of devices all at once and some customers may still find nothing has changed when they power up their Sky box. Luckily, if your Q device is yet to get this upgrade there’s good news.
Sky has promised that all customers will have the new feature by tomorrow, August 12.
You don’t need to do anything to your Sky Q box to receive the changes as it’s all done remotely but once things are downloaded, usually overnight, there’s some pretty dramatic differences including a refreshed home screen and improved voice search.
The biggest change you’ll notice when seeing this update for the first time is the new expanded view on the homepage.
Sky has redesigned this to allow customers to see more of the content they like to watch. Unlike before, where customers would see a minimised screen of the channel or on-demand content they’re currently watching, the update pushes this off-screen, so that the menu can extend almost edge-to-edge.
That means the suggestions screen can display more television shows, films, online video, podcasts, music and games recommended based on what is popular with Sky customers, live events taking place, and customers’ viewing history on their box.
Sky hopes that by packing more suggestions into the updated view, customers will have to spend less time searching for things to watch.
Along with the redesign, there’s now better voice search which should help you find content more quickly via speech.
That means users can ask for themes and genres, alongside actors.
For example, saying “thrillers with Nicole Kidman” will bring up relevant suggestions of what to watch.
You’ll soon be able to ask for entertainment themes too, such as ‘new shows’, ‘Halloween’ or ‘Christmas’.
Finally, following the launch of High Dynamic Range (HDR) on Sky Q earlier this year, Disney+ is now available in this stunning format straight from the Sky Q box.
Most other platforms such as Samsung TVs and Apple TV had this from launch so it’s nice to see Sky joining the party.

A new-look UI, improved voice search and more intuitive navigation make everything easier to find without having to search around, so you can get to the next episode of Succession, a brilliant football podcast, or choose from the most popular British dramas easily.
“And we’re not stopping there, the tech team behind Sky Q and Sky Go are working hard on loads of new updates that we’ll be rolling out every few months, so you can expect your Sky TV experience to keep getting better.”
