It is believed 13 members of staff have tested positive, with another eight cases among patients, Essex Live reports.
The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust said the hospital was operating as normal.
A spokesperson for the trust said: "We can confirm that eight patients and 13 members of staff in one respiratory ward at Basildon Hospital have tested positive for Covid-19.
"We have robust infection prevention and control measures in place to manage these issues swiftly and in line with national guidance.
"All non-Covid patients have been moved to appropriate alternative wards and the staff affected are self-isolating, with all potential contacts traced and informed.
"This has not impacted any of our other hospital services and patients should continue to attend their appointments wearing a face covering, maintain social distancing and regularly wash their hands as they would normally."
