Craziest moon landing conspiracies – and the proof we have they’re all bonkers

More than half a century has passed since Neil Armstrong's first steps on the surface of the moon – but some people still believe that it was all fake.

In a poll last year, 1 in 5 people admitted to believing that the Apollo 11 footage was fake and part of one of many crazy conspiracies of there – and there are some wild ones out there.

But The Daily Star has taken a look at how scientists have managed to debunk them all…

Search and Destroy Mission

According to conspiracy theorists, the moon landing was a cover-up for a search and destroy mission against an alien race living on the moon.

They believe the craters on the surface of the moon in photos taken by spacecraft Apollo 7 and 8 are evidence that NASA launched a 'bombing campaign' to eradicate an alien race that occupied the dark side of the moon.

The Apollo 11 mission was then dubbed a search and destroy mission to hunt the rest of the aliens.

The Facts: Craters on the Moon are caused by asteroids and meteorites colliding with the lunar surface, according to Swinburne University.

Waving Flag

In pictures from the mission, the American flag appears to be flapping in the wind and many have questioned how this could be possible as there is no air and wind in space.

The Facts: NASA designed special flags for astronauts to take with them which have a horizontal rod inside to make them stick out from the flagpole.

According to, the astronauts had trouble extending the rod all the way, and in still pictures, this creates a ripple effect that makes the flag look like it’s waving in the wind.

There are no stars

In the footage and stills from Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon, there were no stars visible in the background.

Conspiracy theorists believed this is because the clips were fake and the astronauts never went to space… but why would they go to the trouble of making a space set and forget to add stars?

Scientists had a much more logical explanation.

The Facts: The surface was brightly illuminated as they landed on the light side of the moon in their bright white reflective suits.

Unfortunately, the camera exposure was messed up by the brightness of the suits and surface, meaning the stars were out of the camera's focus.

Stanley Kubrick filmed it

Some believe that the footage was fake because they believe 2001: A Space Odyssey director, Stanley Kubrick filmed it.

The talented Hollywood filmmaker had created such a realistic image of outer space in 1968 that some conspiracy theorists later wondered if the government had actually hired Kubrick to film the historic moment.

The Facts: Kubrick’s movie 2001 looked real because Kubrick enlisted astronomical artists and aerospace engineers to help him with it.

Any potential "evidence" that Kubrick filmed the moon landing has itself proved to be a hoax.
