Dog owner's heartbreaking warning after pet falls ill after going for a walk | The Sun

A DOG owner has issued a heartbreaking warning after her pet fell ill after going for a walk.

Lindsay Tong had been walking 10-year-old Jack Tsu Ella in Laughton Woods, North Lincolnshire on Thursday.

But as soon as they got home her beloved pooch began to vomit.

Ella was rushed to the vet and was sent back home with medication – but she sadly got worse.

During her second examination vets found she was covered in harvest mites, which cause itching, rashes, vomiting and an increased heart rate.

Now Lindsay wants other dog owners to be aware of the symptoms so that they can catch it early.

She told Grimbsy Live: "She was salivating, shaking and very distressed. She wouldn’t walk or move and her tail firmly between her legs so we rushed her back to the vets who kept her in to monitor her.

"We were told she was sick hourly so they gave her IV fluids and antibiotics. They told us that she seemed very poorly, so they now think it is actually seasonal canine disease.”

SCI usually strikes from September to November, when owners love to walk their dogs in the carpets of autumn leaves, and without prompt veterinary treatment it can prove fatal.

Symptoms usually appear within 24 to 72 hours of dogs walking in woodland in autumn, and can come on very quickly and include vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy.

Harvest mites have been linked to the disease but tests have not proved conclusive.

Lindsay said: "We were told the mites between her paws and on one ear. Her entire body is covered in a red rash and her gums have gone bright red.

"I am now terrified that she is not going to be okay and hating myself that I took her for a walk there.

“We never usually walk in the woods, we stick to the field and the village but thought it would be a nice morning out for the kids and her, a decision I greatly regret.

"I’m crossing everything that she will get through this and the vets will get her better but I’m scared.

“There were various other dog walkers there when we went too, I just hope they are all okay."
