Democrats formally nominated Joe Biden for president on Tuesday, vowing his election would repair a pandemic-battered America and put an end to the chaos that has defined Republican President Donald Trump’s administration. The US President has been trailing behind the former Vice President in polls most of the year. But Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart explained this is because Mr Biden doesn’t have the same baggage Hillary Clinton does which was used to Mr Trump’s advantage in the 2016 election.

Speaking to Channel 4 news, Mr Capehart said: “Hillary Clinton had been in American public life for more than three decades and with that came a lot of baggage that some Democrats have problems with but most definitely Republicans have problems with.

“But Joe Biden doesn’t have the same baggage as Hillary Clinton.

“Someone said on American TV a few days ago that Joe Biden is that public figure that the public doesn’t really know.

“They’ve seen him and they like him but they don’t know him and they don’t know him in the way they knew or thought they knew Hillary Clinton.

“The other thing that is in Joe Biden’s favour is that the impression of him is ‘good man’.

“How he has touched people, through his empathy. People are telling their stories as to how Joe Biden personally touched their lives just by being there and making himself open and available.”

It comes as former first lady Michelle Obama launched a blistering attack on President Trump on Monday and urged Americans to elect Democrat Joe Biden to end the chaos she said had been created during the four years of Trump’s presidency.

In an impassioned speech capping the first night of the Democratic National Convention, Ms Obama said the Republican Trump “has had enough time to prove that he can do the job” but had failed to meet the moment in a country reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, economic turmoil and racial injustice.

But President Trump has hit out at the former First Lady for her pre-recorded interview as he insists he wouldn’t have the job if Barack Obama didn’t do a “bad job”.

He said: “Michelle Obama was over her head and frankly, she should have made the speech live, which she didn’t do – she taped it.

“And it was not only taped, it was taped a long time ago because she had the wrong deaths.

“She didn’t even mention the vice-presidential candidate in the speech and you know, she gets these fawning reviews.

“If you gave a real review, it wouldn’t be so fawning.

“I thought it was a very divisive speech, extremely divisive and frankly, I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for Barack Obama.

“I wouldn’t be in the White House except for Barack Obama because they did a bad job – Biden and Obama.

“If they did a good job, I wouldn’t be here. I’d be building buildings someplace and having a good time.”
