‘Dozens’ of KFC bags delivered to Chinese President’s hotel before Putin summit

"Dozens" of KFC meals were reportedly delivered to Chinese President Xi Jinping's five-star Moscow hotel after productive talks with Vladimir Putin.

Xi and Putin held four-and-a-half hours of talks on Monday, March 20, calling each other “dear friend” and even walking together to the Chinese President's car.

The talks were accompanied by a six-course meal that included blini with quail and mushrooms, fish and pomegranate sorbet, according to a menu published by a state media journalist.

It appears the large order of KFC was also delivered to Xi's luxury hotel in the Russian capital just after the Chinese delegation arrived.

"The recipients of the food were unknown," Russian media stated.

But heavy security stood by as delivery men lined the sidewalk with dozens of food bags, in footage captured by Ruptly, a Russian state-owned video news agency.

"Dozens of packages from KFC were delivered to the five-star Soluxe Hotel in Moscow, where Xi Jinping was staying," wrote Ukrainian journalist Maria Drutska on Twitter, alongside the video.

It was reported last year that following Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Yum! Brands (KFC operator) was selling 70 KFC restaurants in Russia to Smart Service (Russian operator), with the others remaining independently franchised, per The Moscow Times.

Yum said Smart Service franchisees would be "responsible" for keeping the company's Russian employees and for rebranding the stores.

It appears the order to Xi's hotel still carried KFC branding, with the famous Colonel visible on some of the bags.

Other fast-food chains announced their exits from Russia last year. Starbucks said it was closing 130 stores in May, as did McDonald's.

During the meeting on Monday between Xi and Putin, the Russian leader said he was open to talks on Ukraine.
