Dream honeymoon in Bora Bora turns into a nightmare

A honeymoon to Bora Bora turned into a nightmare for a California couple when the husband dove into shallow water and suffered a spinal cord injury that’s left him unable to walk, according to a report.

John and Alana Knight of Santa Clarita were married April 7 and were on the final day of their dream honeymoon to the famed French Polynesian island when he was injured, KTLA reported.

“They got married and they’re looking forward to starting their new life, and taking this beautiful honeymoon,” Dori Lancaster, Alana’s longtime friend, told KTLA.

“And then all of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, their script just changed,” she said.

Alana’s dad, Tom Cooper, said: “John took a dive off one of those huts that are over the water, those hotel huts. They thought the water was a lot deeper than what is what, and his head hit the sand.”

John fractured his C-7 cervical vertebra, causing him to lose feeling in his legs. He was evacuated to Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia, where he underwent surgery, the outlet reported.

“Every day is different, every hour’s different. It’s a roller-coaster,” Alana told KTLA. “He thought he was drowning so I had to jump in and get him. We thought he was paralyzed.”

John has regained some feeling in his legs, but has suffered lung complications, among other issues.

The family hopes to arrange specialized medical transport to bring John back to the US.

“We’re just trying to get back home and it’s been a nightmare,” Alana said.

Her father said he felt helpless.

“There was nothing that we could do,” Cooper said. “My passport is expired, I couldn’t get down there. I didn’t have the funds to do that.”

Lancaster added: “You just don’t imagine something like that happening, especially on your honeymoon.”
