‘Dull and wet’ weather to hit UK for King’s Coronation after hottest day of year

Dull and wet weather looks set spoil King Charles III's coronation ceremony on Saturday (May 6) if the latest Met Office forecast is anything to go by.

It will prove to be in stark contrast to the current Bank Holiday weekend, which has seen some Brits revel in a 20C mini-heatwave.

Saturday (April 29) saw Pershore, Worcestershire reach 20.2C — the highest recorded temperature in England so far this year.

The mercury is expected to remain at a level in and around that figure during the early stages of this week thanks to a high-pressure system covering England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

But when that moves away ahead of the weekend, rain is expected to move in from the southwest.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna explains: "We are stuck between an area of high pressure to the northeast of the UK and lower pressure to the west.

"Warm air from the Atlantic has brought a lot of moisture too which will help trigger showers.

"We are looking at potentially heavy and thundery showers on Saturday in Northern Ireland, northwest England and Wales which will tend to ease going into the evening."

Looking ahead to Coronation weekend, the UK's national weather service said in full: "On Friday, a band of rain will slowly edge northeastwards across the UK, closely followed by brighter conditions with showery outbreaks developing, some of these heavy, perhaps thundery.

"Far north/northeastern parts staying mostly dry, although feeling much cooler here in stronger winds.

"Through the weekend, southern parts are more likely to see unsettled conditions with fresh winds, rain and showers, these perhaps heavy and thundery, while the north is likely to remain drier."

Last night bookies Ladbrokes slashed the odds from 5/1 to just 2/1 on Saturday being the wettest day of the year.
