Fury as 150 Army heroes are dragged to court over IRA deaths more than 45 years ago

The Coroners Service sent letters demanding they appear at  inquests into IRA suspects’ deaths more than 45 years ago.

The regiment wrote on Facebook: “We’re on hand to offer advice and guidance to any veteran who  received a letter or has concerns.

“Many have been in touch. Spread the word.”

A Para source added: “Shootings were investigated 45 years ago.   There was no evidence of  wrongdoing.

“If  they were not  properly  done, it’s a matter for ministers, not soldiers.”

Two Para veterans  also await trial over IRA man Joe McCann’s 1972 murder. One ex-Para said: “Terrorists who murdered  weren’t prosecuted or had sentences cut. Yet  troops who risked their lives are prosecuted. It’s a witch hunt.”

More inquest summons are due in coming months.

The MoD vowed: “We will support  any veteran.”
