Moment huge FIREBALL ‘explodes in garage’ under Elephant & Castle station sending onlookers dashing for cover – as giant smoke cloud towers over London

This is the extraordinary moment a huge fireball breaks out near Elephant and Castle station and sends onlookers dashing for cover as enormous plumes of black smoke enveloping south London.

A witness to the blaze in a garage near the station filmed the moment the fireball broke out this afternoon, while others posted images of the massive smoke clouds filling the skies of the capital. 

London Fire Brigade received a report of a fire in a garage near Elephant and Castle station at 1.43pm and have sent 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters to tackle the blaze. It is not known if there have been any injuries. 

One witness said on Twitter: ‘Smoke still pouring out, the area under the station is called Little Columbia and there are numerous small Colombian shops and eateries which are now covered in thick black smoke. Ambulances and fire fighting crew in attendance.’

Another person added: ‘Individual reports black smoke followed by explosion and ‘large fireball’ at Elephant and Castle train station in London.’
