Macron blasted for ‘toxic masculinity’ after downing bottle of beer
Emmanuel Macron has been accused of encouraging binge drinking and “toxic masculinity” after he downed a bottle of beer on a visit to a rugby club. The French President sank a Corona in just 17 seconds before slamming the empty bottle down to cheers from players and staff at Toulouse.
Mr Macron had just watched Toulouse beat La Rochelle in the final of the Top 14 championship at the Stade de France outside Paris on Saturday.
He went to the winning team’s changing room after the match to congratulate them.
French daily Le Figaro reported that players and staff at Toulouse had reportedly taken a vow of silence over the president’s skulling a beer.
But a video found its way onto social media and quickly went viral.
Socialist senator Laurence Rossignol tweeted in response: “A beer down in one? What’s he trying to prove? That he’s a real man? A macho cliché.”
Green Party MEP Sandrine Rousseau tweeted: “Toxic masculinity in political leadership in one image.”
Right-wing MEP Gilbert Collard accused the French President of showing off.
But Toulouse coach Clément Poitrenaud said: “All I can tell you is that he got a good reception.”

Mayor of Toulouse Jean-Luc Moudenc said Mr Macron had responded to a spirited challenge by players.
He said: “It was a nice, very spontaneous moment.”
It was perhaps an unusual choice of drink for the French president who is known to enjoy a glass or two of wine a day.
His predecessor Jacques Chirac reportedly preferred Corona.

Mr Macron is a staunch defender of France’s wine industry with his stance troubling health officials, according to French news website The Connexion.
Health professionals have accused him of encouraging drinking against the recommendations presented in countless studies which detail the dangers of excessive wine drinking, the publication reports.
The French President reportedly dismissed calls for the introduction in France of Dry January, which sees people abstain from alcohol for the month.
