Melania heads back to border — without controversial jacket
Maybe Melania Trump does care this time.
A week after wearing a jacket featuring a cryptic “I really don’t care, do u?” on the back, the first lady boarded her plane Thursday wearing an unadorned black top and white slacks en route back to the southern border.
She landed about 1 p.m. at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, where she was expected to visit a Customs and Border Patrol facility.
Trump planned to hold a roundtable discussion with Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and US Marshals Service officials, as well as a local rancher.
The trip comes a week after Trump traveled to the border town of McAllen, Texas, to meet with officials dealing with detained families.
That trip was overshadowed by her $39 olive-green Zara jacket with the baffling message.
Her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said the trip was planned a couple of days after the first lady returned from Texas, where she was unable to visit a Department of Homeland Security facility because of flooding.
Grishman said the first lady was taking the trip with the president’s encouragement.
“She wasn’t able to visit a DHS facility, and she wants to learn from the people on the front lines at the border,” Grisham said.
The legal situation for immigrant children has also changed, Grisham added, “and she’s anxious to learn how they’re implementing the new process. There was a court case that threw a wrench in the works.”
Grisham said the first lady continues to discuss the situation with her husband, but did not elaborate.
“This is a complex issue. She recognizes that,” she said. “She’s learning that these people at HHS facilities are providing some outstanding care under difficult circumstances. She’s advocating for quality care for these children under difficult circumstances.”
The spokeswoman added that Melania “cares about children deeply. She also believes in strong border laws and treating everybody equally.”
Last week, Grisham said the jacket worn by the first lady contained no hidden message, but interest in her odd sartorial choice was a distraction from her trip.
President Trump also undercut the no-message message with a tweet about his wife.
“‘I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’ written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!” he wrote.
On Wednesday, her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN that the first lady “wants to continue to check on children.”
“The first lady is moved by what she is hearing, and what she saw in Texas, and she wants to again see and listen for herself what is happening in these places,” she said.
