The earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands and reached a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter Scale, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake struck shortly after 5pm UTC and reached a depth of 10km.
The Kermadec Islands are located around 1,000 km northeast of mainland New Zealand
