Prince Harry’s biggest fan dies aged 99

Prince Harry’s Australian super fan Daphne Dunne has died aged 99 – just a few days after receiving a birthday card from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Ms Dunne had been in hospital with pneumonia for two months before dying a few days after her birthday, 7News said.

The duke and duchess are understood to be very sad to hear the news of her death and their thoughts are with her family and friends.

The duke first spotted her in 2015 when he noticed her wearing a Victoria Cross which had been earned by her first husband Albert Chowne in World War II.

Mr Chowne had been awarded the cross after he died in Papua New Guinea in 1945 during an attack on a Japanese machine gun post.

Prince Harry and Mrs Dunne have met at least three times, each time proudly wearing her husband’s war medals.

In 2017, the duke made Mrs Dunne’s day after he gave her a peck on the cheek.

She had waited for hours in the rain to see him.

She said: “He kissed me on the other cheek this time. He really is a lovely young man and he’s warm and genuine and really cares about the injured servicemen and women, he’s doing a fantastic job supporting them.”

In October 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex met Mrs Dunne outside the Sydney Opera House on the first day of their Australia tour.

After finding his oldest Australian admirer in the crowd of around 2,000 people, Prince Harry said: “I was looking for you earlier and hoped you’d be here. It’s so good to see you again.”

He introduced Meghan to Mrs Dunne.

The duchess told Mrs Dunne: “I am so glad I got to meet you.

“Harry has told me all about you and your special bond, it is so lovely you came to see us, thank you.”

Mrs Dunne said the duchess was “lovely” and that “she’s beautiful”.

“It was lovely to meet the duchess, Meghan. Harry is a wonderful man and I’m so happy he found happiness. They both deserve the absolute world together,” she added.

A social media post from Mrs Dunne’s family announcing her death read: “It is with the saddest of hearts that I would like to share the news that our most beloved mum and nanna, Daphne Dunne, passed away peacefully yesterday morning.”

“She was a truly special lady who will be greatly missed by so many.”

“We love you mum/nanna/Daphne, always and forever.”

It is believed they will be writing to her family privately.
