‘Toxic’ Asian hornets spotted in the UK following warnings they’ll ‘invade pubs’

'Toxic' Asian hornets have been spotted in the UK just weeks after Brits were warned they could start invading pubs.

A video, supplied to the Daily Star by the Asian Hornet Team – Guernsey, shows the venomous insect — which comes with a massive 6mm stinger — flying around one of their 'bait stations'.

In the caption, they wrote: "This is a worker hornet visiting one of the bait stations at Icart. We're getting closer to the nest…"

Dr Karen Raj recently warned that the hornets can inject a venom called mandarotoxin, which is a neurotoxin that affects the nervous system, causing temporary paralysis and a loss of sensation around the sting.

He added: "It is also a necrotoxin, which means it can cause cell death and, to someone who is allergic to the venom it can be lethal."

People allergic to the sting can suffer anaphylactic shock which can result in the swelling of the eyes, mouth and throat.

The medic also explained that a sting may lead to breathing problems and a drop in blood pressure, which could trigger a cardiac arrest.

He said: "The venom from multiple stings can cause kidney failure, which can eventually result in multi-organ failure."

The species of hornet is native to temperate and tropical East Asia, South Asia, Mainland Southeast Asia and some parts of Russia – but fears have been mounting about the pests making their way to the UK.

Brits have been told to be on the lookout for the small killers after one of the creatures was spotted on the south coast.

The Daily Star reports residents of Gurnsey and Jersey have been urged to check their check their homes, gardens, boats and vehicles after an Asian hornet, which is capable of wiping out an entire colony of bees, was captured in Plymouth.

We also reported that Asian hornets have developed a taste for booze, putting pubs on red alert.

The MailOnline reports that the UK has had a total of 28 Asian hornet sightings since 2016 with five of these confirmed to have taken place this year. This includes 14 Asian hornet nests which were destroyed.
