Travel chaos as lorry inferno closes M62 and pile-up shuts M25 near Heathrow Airport

Paramedics and fire crews rushed to the pile-up on the M25 near Heathrow Airport and drivers on the M62 were stopped as a raging lorry fire closed the motorway in both directions.

Drivers said they were stuck in standstill traffic for more than an hour as three lanes were closed.

Tailbacks stretched back to the M40 as drivers reported turning off their engines and getting out to stretch their legs.

People were seen standing in the middle of the M62 as with cars bumper to bumper, after a lorry went up in flames and thick black smoke blew across the lanes.

Paddy McGuinness was caught up in the hold up as he tweeted pictures and videos of himself mingling with other drivers on the tarmac of the M62.

The chaos comes as people begin to celebrate a hot and sunny Bank Holiday – with temperatures expected to soar over the coming few days.

It is not yet known how many vehicles were involved in the crash near the airport.

Highways England tweeted: "All traffic is held on the M25 clockwise while fire work to extract a casualty from one of the vehicles.

"Traffic won't be released until this is done."

It was claimed people desperate to make their long weekend plans were reversing down the hard shoulder to move away from the backlog of traffic.
