Twitter to launch original programming

Twitter is about to look busier than a Times Square billboard.

The social media platform is leaning into video with a slew of deals for original programming with the likes of Walt Disney, ESPN, Viacom and Vice News.

The company unveiled details of its new shows at a presentation in New York on Monday night. The big news of the day came from Twitter’s deal with Disney, which will add live sports content from ESPN that will include breaking news from SportsCenter, programming on Formula 1, Major League Baseball and soccer, as well as live and original video from Barstool Sports, Bleacher Report and Fantasy Focus live, the network’s popular fantasy sports podcast. ESPN will provide more details about its programming on Wednesday.

“The Twitter sports community is the digital roar of the crowd, so there is no better place to start than with ESPN,” said Matthew Derella, Twitter’s global VP of revenue and content.

Twitter did not reveal details of its deal with ESPN parent Disney, which said its partnership consists of live shows and advertising from its portfolio, which includes Disney Channel, Freeform and Marvel.

Monday’s news lifted shares of Twitter 4.5 percent, to $30.31, as Disney stock ticked up 1.1 percent, to $100.33.

Twitter’s new programming also includes a Vice News show on the latest quest to explore space and a pop culture trending news show from Viacom’s Comedy Central.
